Holding Big Tech and AI Accountable
The emergence and quick integration of unregulated AI technology into our everyday lives is alarming. While we need a federal response and regulatory oversight of this emerging technology, it’s necessary for state leaders to develop a state-by-state approach to protect residents and our communities from the worst harms related to Big Tech and AI.
I have been a leader in the tech regulation space and have passed numerous bills to hold Big Tech accountable including:
One of the strongest protections in the country to keep deepfakes from influencing our elections. This bill is so strong that Elon Musk is trying to overturn it
Labor protections and compensations for minors featured in monetized content
Penalties for nonconsensual dissemination of sexual deepfakes
As a millennial legislator with a young child, I bring a unique generational perspective to this work. I currently have over half a dozen bills to regulate the explosive expansion of Big Tech into our day-to-day, including bills to:
Require disclosure to consumers whenever they are interacting with conversational AI
Prohibit companies from allowing consumer access to technology that generates realistic images or videos that undress or “nudify” subjects
Ban minors from accessing conversational chatbots
Secure labor protections and compensation for minors featured in monetized content
Prohibit municipalities from using NDAs in data center development
Not only have I been a leader on the frontlines of passing regulatory oversight, I’ve also spent time educating my fellow legislators – many of them older and less knowledgeable in this subject area – about the dangers this technology, if left unregulated, poses to our state.
This work is largely bipartisan, and I’m looking to keep it that way. No matter where you sit on the ideological spectrum, it’s going to take all of us to ensure Big Tech is held accountable and we keep our children, our communities, and our data protected.
