Protecting Rights and Expanding Freedoms
We are witnessing the current administration in Washington attack our fundamental rights and freedoms. In Minnesota, we’re dedicated to ensuring that everyone who calls our state and our district home are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, immigration status, or disability.
In 2018, I helped create and lead the largest reproductive health, rights, and justice coalition in the state of Minnesota. We laid the groundwork for a statewide movement to protect and expand our reproductive rights. In my first term as your state senator, we passed critical legislation such as:
The Reproductive Freedom Codification Act (RFCA) to repeal unconstitutional and outdated abortion restrictions
The Reproductive Freedom Defense Act (RFDA) to protect patients accessing abortion care in Minnesota from out-of-state prosecution
Medicaid coverage for home birth services
Required study and reporting of maternal deaths to improve prevention measures
As a reproductive justice advocate and Co-Chair of the Reproductive Freedom Caucus, I am committed to upholding the fundamental right to abortion and the full range of reproductive health care from increased access to contraceptives to insurance coverage for fertility services and preservation to universal baby boxes for new parents.
I am the first out lesbian at the Minnesota Senate and a proud member of the Senate Queer Caucus. It’s honor to have passed meaningful legislation that protects and uplifts our community, including:
The Trans Refuge Act which protected children and families from out-of-state prosecution for seeking lawful gender affirming healthcare
The creation of the Council on LGBTQIA2S+ Minnesotans
Updated marriage and parentage laws to be gender inclusive and provide legal protections for same-sex couples and their children
It’s up to each of us to keep fighting for these protections and refuse efforts to take us back in time on Trans and LGBQ+ rights.
I serve as Vice Chair of the Senate People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Caucus. It is imperative to have legislative champions who will continue to advance policies that center equity and justice. As one of the first Black women ever elected to the Minnesota Senate, I’m proud of the legislation we’ve passed to improve the lives of BIPOC Minnesotans.
CROWN Act bans discrimination based on race-based natural hair texture and styles
Creation of the African American Family Preservation Act intended
Driver’s License for All
Requirement for ethnic studies to be taught in schools
As we see continued efforts to undermine due process and civil rights for immigrant and BIPOC communities, we must stand firm on the frontlines to protect our residents from cruel policies meant to divide and weaken us.
I’m proud to serve on the Senate Human Services committee and champion the policies Minnesotans with disabilities rely on. In the last three sessions, I’ve passed laws to…
Eliminate TEFRA and parental fees that function as a tax on parents with children with disabilities
Invest $889 million into Community First Services and Supports
Provide $500,000 to Dakota County to reduce workforce shortages in disability services
In the upcoming session, I will be working on increasing program integrity measures in disability services, enacting disability wage justice by eliminating subminimum wage, and protecting programs from executive overreach.
I’m proud of the work I’ve done to protect the rights and freedoms of Minnesotans, and I will continue to pursue legislation that protects and expands our wins to ensure our classrooms, workspaces, and communities remain inclusive, safe, and supported.
